Dulal Hossain- patuakhali district correspondent:
About three and a half kilometers of river erosion from Baherchar to West Kachipara (Gopalia) of Karkhana river in Kachipara union of Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali has become horrible. As a result, houses, crop lands and plants are disappearing day by day. People from Baherchar to Gopalia are in fear of erosion.
It can be seen on the ground that from Baherchar to Gopalia there are two markets Baherchar and Gopalia, three government primary schools, three cyclone shelters including roads and a madrasa.
Cyclone shelters built at a cost of crores of taka, government buildings, unpaved roads and educational institutions are most at risk of river erosion.
Shamim of Gopalia village, which was affected by the landslide, said the demolition has been going on for 30 years. Hundreds of houses were lost in the abyss of the river from Baherchar to Gopalia, including a village called Hajipur. We are poor now. If the river water rises, the erosion will increase further.
“I am 50 years old,” said Yunus Pada, another from Gopalia village, in a tearful voice. I am a farmer by profession, our land, garden house, Eidgah field are all broken. The government is not taking any action. I am very scared. I can’t sleep at night, when the house breaks down. It’s like sprinkling salt on a cut! If the house collapses, there is no more land to build a house. He also said to the repoter that at a time most of the people of the respective area wiil become homeless soon.
At that time, the helpless families of the area who are at risk of river erosion strongly requested the concerned authorities to draw the attention of the Prime Minister. The only demand of the people of the affected areas is that all steps should be taken to stop the erosion of the river in a short time.
So my fervent request to our local MP and concerned authorities to take necessary steps to remove the suffering of the people who are at a risk of river erosion by the bank of the river.
